It’s not just a Sedum roof that can be attractive, have you considered herbs on your roof or vegetation specially selected to attract bees and butterflies?
Green roofs can perform a vital role in helping cities adapt to the effects of climate change by reducing the need for artificial cooling in hot weather and attenuating or capturing rainwater runoff, as well as providing a range of habitats for urban wildlife. At Green Horizon Eco Solutions, we are happy to advise you about the best application for your project.
Do a Green Roofs need maintenance?
To maintain a rich green roof, it is important to conduct maintenance twice a year. Sedum roof maintenance consists of inspecting the roof for weeds carried by the wind and if necessary and applying fertiliser to the vegetation blankets. Roof drains should also be checked and cleaned if necessary.

Other Benefits of Having a Green Roof
• Slowing the flow of surface water from rooftops into the drainage network; thereby, helping to reduce peak demand and incidence of flooding by source control.
• Natural filtration of surface water run-off.
• Develop greater levels of natural evapotranspiration by increasing levels of vegetation.
• Improved thermal insulation.
• Sequestration of CO2 by photosynthesis.
• Protection of roof membranes from UV degradation and weathering.
• Improved levels of bio-diversity to include replication of natural habitats for creatures such as honey bees.
• Promotion of urban green space and a feel-good factor gained from this.
What Type of Roof Designs Are Available?
Extensive roofs are designed to produce the same benefits as semi intensive and intensive green roofs. They have a tinner soil profile which means less weight which in turn means no to minimal structural modifications. Sedums and mosses are most suitable for this type of green roof. A typical weight of 50kg per m2.
Extensive:
Semi intensive roofs have a profile of 4 – 6 inches, this allows more variation in planting from the extensive roof and partial structural works depending on your existing roofs construction. A typical semi intensive roof can have as much as 200kg of weight per 1m2.
Semi Intensive:
An intensive roof has a lot deeper of a soil profile, 6-8 inches which allows more plant diversity, from wildflowers to plants and shrubs but this also requires a significant amount of structural reinforcement work to the existing roof to allow for the extra weight, typically
250kg per 1m2.
Intensive:
We can also build bespoke garden structures as above with a green roof incorporated into the design.
