We provide our specialist services for all types of permeable driveways
in Newcastle and the whole of the North East. Conventional paving directs
surface water or rain water to the nearest drainage system, and in
some areas this can cause serious issues such as flash flooding.

By allowing rainwater to make its way into the ground, permeable driveways
are a very sustainable and eco-friendly choice for homeowners. In terms
of visual appeal, permeable paving is just as pleasing to the eye. Here

Flood Prevention

Permeable Driveways - Green Horizon Eco Solutions

Many flash floods are not caused by the overflowing of rivers, surface water run-off and the capacity of drainage which was built hundreds of years ago is also a contributing factor to flooding. Permeable driveways can help prevent flash flooding, by absorbing water rather than directing it to drainage or allowing it to build up on top of the surface.

Natural Filtration

During the process of returning rain water in the ground natural filtration takes place as it passes through the sub-base of the paving. This removes pollutants and impurities from the water, which can stop water pollution.

Reduces The Heat Island Affect

Heat islands are common in towns and cities because the amount of land which is covered by concrete or asphalt paving. These surfaces absorb heat, which increases the temperature and causes a heat island effect. If we installed more permeable paving, which allows the soil underneath to breathe, we could reduce heat islands and bring temperatures down.

What types of permeable driveways are available?

Reinforced Grass Driveway and Parking

These are either plastic or concrete grid systems that reinforce the ground stopping your wheels creating ruts but allowing the grass to grow between the mesh. They are easy to install and look very natural once the grass is established. You will need to use the  recommended grass species that will grow in the mesh. While this is the most natural looking and eco-friendly solution, it does require maintenance such as mowing.

Gravel Driveways

Gravel driveways are very popular because they are easy to create, can be attractive and are very effective as permeable driveways, the gravel is laid over a sub-base and weed mesh. A gravel driveway is very easy to maintain, especially if you have used a weed mesh to stop any unwanted plant growing through. Plastic systems can also be used to stabilise a gravel driveway and stop the gravel spreading away from the driveway.

Gravel is not good for steeper permeable driveways and can be difficult if you need to wheel things across it, such as children’s buggies or wheelchairs. Maintenance is easy, but you will have to sweep up the gravel which scatters from time to time, and keep on top of any weeds that appear.

Wheel Tracked Driveways

This is where you only pave the area of your driveway where the wheels of the car will go. This way the rest of the driveway remains porous and permeable, the areas un paved can be either gravelled or turfed. The paved tracks will be laid as normal and the water will then run off on to permeable ground.

This is another cheap and easy solution although it will require some maintenance to keep the planting between the tracks tidy.

Permeable Block Paving

There is a wide range of permeable block paving that allow the water to pass through while still providing a sound hard surface for driving and parking on that allow the water through the material or around the edges of the blocks. They have to be built on a porous sub-base. Block paving is a very durable surface that will require a minimal amount of maintenance. You will still have the look and feel of a normal paved area. The choice of materials and styles is huge.
