Natural Flood Management
Our team are happy to provide expert services for natural flood management across the North East. Natural flood management is the process of controlling and reducing the risk that flooding can cause. Flooding can cause irreversible damage to natural environments/habitats, as well as man-made property.
Ways we are reducing the risks and damage from natural floods:
- Monitor erosion patterns to track any changes in the shape of water bodies.
- Restoring and reshaping meanders in rivers and streams to slow the process of erosion.
- Managing land to make it more resistant to erosion/water damage.
- Beach management – Green Horizon have been managing beaches to take energy out of stormy seas to protect coasts and seaside towns.
- Water diversion – Directing rivers to natural floodplains to make room for water and move it away from vulnerable areas.
- Covering ground with plants to reduce water pollution and surface run-off
- Planting trees and hedges to absorb more water, catch rainfall and slow water flow on ground level.
- Construction of ditches and drainage systems including flow paths.
The future of natural flood management:
As time progresses, our understanding of flood prevention only grows. Knowledge of the correct methods to match the situation will become more common among people overtime, and eventually the ability to predict flood events like this will become common knowledge in the near future.
Field and Lawn Drainage
We also provide expert Field and Lawn services in regard to flood control. We can install drainage systems in gardens, football pitches, golf courses, bowling greens and more.
When arriving at a site requested by a customer, we carry out checks on nearby piping systems, and check where water will go in the event of high rainfall. From this information we can then decide the next steps and potential installation. High rainfall is normally the issue in most areas, however pipes bursting or poorly directing water may be the problem instead. Pipe damage can cause leaking which can lead to floods, if we deem that pipe repair is suitable it can be carried out.
Next, we see where your water is being directed to, is it collecting at a centre point in your lawn? Is there surface flooding? These questions are always discussed when discovering the issue with your land. If your field/lawn is flat, then there may be a lower point where the water starts to collect. Replacement or installation of drainage systems can prevent water collection in flat areas and redirect the water away from your property.
Flood management in property exterior
Permeable Driveways – The third type of flood management focuses on changes to your property to reduce damage in the case of high rainfall or even flooding. We will provide our specialist services for installation of permeable surfaces. Permeable surface is a terrain which allows water to absorb and pass through it. Standard driveways and pavements are traditionally impermeable, which means they are a risk to not only your property, but other properties in your local area. These surfaces allow water to flow and collect with ease and can be the cause of floods in the first place. To solve this issue, we have permeable alternatives for surfaces such as driveways and pavements. The main way that these surfaces can be transformed into being permeable, is not a drainage system, but by replacing the material it is made from. Replacing your driveway for one of our variants, can turn your property into a natural drainage system, and slow the effects the flooding.
