Being out and exploring our beautiful country is just amazing. Whenever we look for new places to visit, there’s always a couple that we find that relate back to our eco-friendly solutions that we offer. The Washington Wetland Centre is one of our favourite places to visit as we love to see the eco solutions they have in place. The wetland centre has not only a green roof but a rainwater harvesting system in place too!
As you walk around the grounds, you can learn about the systems that they have in place, why they have them and how they are helping the environment. A green roof creates a new habitat and food supply for endangered species and insects. Plus, it helps to create biodiversity in your area.

The rainwater harvesting system (Bio Retention System/ Rain Garden) helps to store and re-purpose the water back into the ground rather than it go down the drain. For Washington Wetland Centre, when there are heavy downpours, the ponds can overflow into many different hollow areas which will store the excess rainwater. It soaks very slowly into the soil where the plant roots, trees etc will absorb the water… ultimately it will help them to flourish in time.

By having a Rain Garden installed to your home, you are preventing as much water from going through the drainage system. It slows down the flow of water into not only the drains but also the streams and rivers. This is an aid to help prevent flooding and create wildlife habitats that are needed more than ever.
As there is more and more land being purchased for development across the North East, it is leaving less places for insects and wildlife to grow and live. It’s so important that we all do our part and create a habitat for insects to live in.
We can help you get started on your very own Rain Garden project or Green Roof installation.
